Engage! How many sides do you have or use?

So, here you are using Social Media and before you say you are not, let me point out a few things:-

  • You are using (in the majority of cases) a smart phone or tablet = A Social Media tool/medium
  • You are reading this because you got a notification via Twitter, Facebook, or because you signed up for an alert = Using various Social Media Platforms
  • This is a blog = A blog is a facility within Social Media way to report, record or inform people of events or incidents that have occurred to or appealed to the blog writer, thus making them write this blog

There you go – three points that highlight and show that you are using Social Media, so what does this show?

Have you worked it out yet?

Yes – you have a side! You see there is two sides to everything – “their side” and “your side” and what you have done is just read their side of events/views/information thus allowing you to create your side – do you agree or dis-agree?

Actually the majority of you will disagree – i.e. do nothing!! Why? Well, simple! We don’t do much in the mainstream really. We say we will do something or tell friends or colleagues that we will do something – when in actually in fact we don’t! And guess what……..

These people and companies know you will not comment or say anything!!

You don’t believe me? Just think:-

  • how many people view or read something?
  • Then look how many people like it?
  • How many people will actually share it?
  • And finally, how many people have commented on it?

So, when people/companies write blogs (or place status updates or Tweet), they know that what they are creating is something that will fall into four categories:-

  1. People will not read it
  2. People will read it but not do anything
  3. People will either like it or share it
  4. People will comment on it

Let us look at those and break it down:-

  • So if no ones reads it – why not? Headline, opening lines (if these are shown) or because they don’t have time? Either way, you have lost them – why? Think of something that can be your CTA* to get people reading it
  • So, have people read it in part or completely read it? Either way, they have read it but as far as you know, have they liked it? Would they show and tell anyone? If not, why not? Think of some sort of CTA* to see if you can gather the engagement….
  • Now if people have read and liked it, they will click your like button or even better they will share it. So, they have got you – why or how have they got you? Either way they have got you and managed to get you engaged with them which is what they want – or is it?
  • Well what they really want is this – you have commented, you have responded to their CTA and got you to comment on what they have done and this is what they were trying to achieve

Now recently, I was listening to a podcast** which was mentioning blogs and one of things they where saying was that they thought blogs only had a readership of 40% per blog that were written with less than 5% actually writing/commenting on the blog! The figure of 40% is said to be based over 5 years and this is due to the fact, that a lot of bloggers will actually write the blog and then re-post a few more times that year and then a t least another three times over the next four years! So if it takes five years to get to 40% – imagine how many read it on first release?

So, if readership reaches 40% over 5 years with only 5% actually commenting what are you both doing wrong? They aren’t getting you to engage with their CTA and in turn you are not creating a CTA to get them to engage with you!

So, when you read something, like, share, comment (whether praise or disagreement ! either way each one of the three does and will most importantly create ENGAGEMENT! If they don’t:-

  • get you to engage then they will not know if they are hearing what their prospects or clients feel

and

  • reply to your like, share or comment – they are not engaging with their clients or prospects

So, either way, (and this applies to your suppliers too) you have two sides and you need to use them! When you do something, engage with them to create them to engage back – thus you have developed the two sides you have

  • ENGAGER
  • ENGAGEE

Remember you can make a different when is it comes to engaging with people via Social Media

Remember 2014 – #RUReadyFor2014

Obama injured, White House attacked, News story, Social Media – which one of them is true or accurate?

So Financial Regulators allowed for Social Media to be used in sharing and communicating with investors a few weeks back, and now AP get’s hacked!

Via the BBChttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11900474

Via Sky – http://news.sky.com/story/1082096/dow-jones-dives-after-fake-obama-attack-tweet

Hacked AP 2013 04 24

A paper reviewer on BBC World News this morning, wondered/speculated that maybe this hacker was to hijack the market and make a killing on the stock market – why this assumption or conspiracy theory?

At the end of the day everything is done with the stock market based on results which have to be produced, checked and verified and the same with the news. It is rare that the major story are reported incorrectly – ok, there maybe part of a story that in-correct – and when news was reported via bulletins, we all believed it as it would have been checked prior to release.

Now we have rolling 24 hour news, whilst the main news item is correct, some broadcasters do get caught up on/in the tide of hearsay or gossips from eye-witnesses or nowadays, reports from Social Media, which may not 100% accurate but at least the main body of the story is true.

So, after the attack on AP’s Twitter account overnight and the Tweet being posted say that The White House had been attacked and Barack Obama was injured, the Dow Jones went into a bit of a free-fall/panic by 0.9% before recovering just as quickly. So, if AP is hacked and the market’s panic, is this an example of over reliance on Social Media? Why are we this reliant on it? Why were the markets’ allowed to react on this news without verification? Was it because it came from AP – an organisation people in the know or senior positions always rely on – and thus so it must be true? Or it could be said that each news agency is always wanting to outdo each other, whether it be AP, Reuters, BBC, Sky and Fox amongst many others, so we just rely on the first organisation to report it without checking with others…

If we are to be part of a faster moving world all fueled by our self-reliance based on Social Media – how do we monitor and regulate it? Can we regulate within our company’s environment? Gossip, hearsay, a bad report, can have a massive effect on your business at least 10 times more than good news that you may want to report. How do we regulate this within our company as what are you regulating?

–       If you are hacked, was it because your password was not correct in security terms – well can anything?

–       Can we make all company news via just one channel? But does that mean we only tweet/update/report at certain times but it comes across as infrequent or impersonal?

–       Could we take out insurance against this? Yes we could, but whilst this may cover us and our clients – how do you cover, protect and value damage to your reputation this could cause?

So, interaction is key through this article and the story behind it, but we need to decide on how we move forward. After all, we all are part this tide and we can make a difference, by thinking about what we do and working together to educate each other – or can we?

People are too often too quick to jump on other’s and criticise them without working together and trying understand what that person was saying or trying to explain. So, before you open your mouth or place your fingers on the keyboard, make sure you see the wider picture not see it as a chance to self promote yourself or company!

We can all use Social Media to create a better environment by working together, so let us be a community of one sharing information, support and help thus making our on-line community, one of not just trust but support and assistance to our on-line family.

So why deliver words which turn out to be hollow and how do you survive in business behaving that way?

One thing that I have come across more and more frequently lately is hollow words…..

Now hollow words is something that you expect from Councillors and Politicians as this is something they seem to relish in especially more after being elected as well as maybe television, film and music celebrities as it seems to be very much in their genes, yet it is becoming more and more prevalent into today’s business marketplace and environment.

With Social Media becoming more and more part of our lives and how it can detail every part of our life, make sure you really put yourself in the  limelight so you don’t seem to swap and change like there is no tomorrow.

Time to be a success does indeed take time  – whilst some ideas or personalities can do this over night – so if you don’t tell a consistent message about what you do or provide, this can lead to doubt’s about your offerings and credibility. Whether via LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and now Google Plus being so open (even though you can restrict access this does not always work), plus people’s greed for success and money – it’s easy for you to be shot down by other’s or by yourself un-intentionally.

So, if you are going to do something, plan what you are going to do over say the next year’s and think this through like this:-

What I am wanting to do over the next three year’s?

– Where do I plan to be in three year’s time?

– What do I need to do over the next three year’s to achieve this?

– What have I  done over the last three year’s to help me achieve this?

– If the last three year’s mirror what you are doing over the next year’s (or similar) – make the message consistent

– If you have done several or many different things over these last three year’s – do they impact or explain what you are planning to do next?

Social Media and on-line information, provides a playground for people to search and research you, so, whilst people may query and question what your work or methods, would you not trust this person more because they have been consistent over the last three year’s with what they offer – over someone who has flitted from one idea to another over the same period?

Can a variety of roles prove to add credibility?  Of course it can, if the message and common theme is clear. Whilst my career may seem to have varied over the last 20 plus odd year’s, each aspect of what I have done and do, all interlinks. And, in times of trouble and hardship, I have still kept a consistent view and message. So yes, I may not be to your cup of tea but the message and offering is consistent and clear from myself and I am able to explain how thing’s all interact.

So, before listening to other’s and being quick to run people down, make sure you speak to that person and understand what they are trying to achieve and offer. If you have something on your mind or can’t understand what they do, have done and through to what they do now, ask them!

Is it not better to hear the truth from the horse’s mouth (so too speak?), so you can fully understand their plan and reasoning and thus help you to plan not only your future but whether this person can be helpful and influential with assisting over your journey over the next three year’s…..

So, never be afraid to ask about someone and see what the truth is instead of just listening to hearsay and gossip – be open transparent. A prime example of this is Nigel Botterill (of N5 Group which includes The Best of Group and The Entrepreneurs Circle ) who is very clear about not only his successes but his failures too plus Brad Burton of 4Networking is also very open about is up and down’s and struggles.

In a nutshell, be clear, be open and honest. You may not be everyone’s cup of tea or flavour of the month, but if your message is clear and very consistent, then your credibility will shine through and silence your doubters. As these people will not have the same as yourself, history which equals credibility.

Remember, what I said I earlier about on-line history? What happens grow’s on-line with yourself. So, if you are open and clear from day one and keep that message consistent, they you are proving a credible past to your future.

If someone bursts on the scene and all over sudden they story appears, does this provide you with credibility to trust this person? Think about it, would you hire, trust or employ someone without knowing their CV or history? Of course not, you what something you check and seek references from.

In essence, make yourself open, transparent and clear because if you don’t – aren’t your words just hollow and what your doubter’s and competition will use against you?

Why is Britain falling apart? Is it because of our fascination with “so called” celebrities?

Well why do we now feel that reality television is the new way to be seen as a way of inspiring people? Whilst people say “oh, you are just jealous” – please just think of what you have said!!

In most towns and cities, there are local people who have done well by either themselves or with the support of their family. Yet, why do people fall over themselves with “The Only Way Is Essex” (TOWIE) and followed by “Made In Chelsea” or “Geordie Shore“?

This clearly is shown in this article by the Daily Mail where they distracted away from such a great event as The Young Scot Awards to compare about the outfit from someone from TOWIE was wearing against Carol Smilie – why? What?

Let us look back and you will see a Fashion Design student turned model and television celebrity Carol Smilie has actually done many things since bursting on to our television screens back in 1989 and yes she was a game show hostess. Yet, within three years had progressed into mainstream television and through the last 24 years become a versatile person in television, writing, business and thus also becoming a Trustee – a role model? Yes in my opinion, because in those days, you could make an impact and a difference. Can the same be said of today’s media personalities? Over the last – let’s say – four years, name someone who progressed on to the television and media scene and progressed into mainstream inspiring people? See, you can’t………

Yet over this period you will easily name so many “so-called” celebrities and inspiring people who have come from the world of reality television and television shows who are household names not only due to this but the constant attention paid to them by Tabloid newspapers and in my opinion, the latest tabloid on the block, The Daily Mail yet why and what impact is this having on our culture?

It used to be a case that you were inspired to the become something in your life due to someone who was a local hero or business success, a major personality via television (like a presenter), business or major incident or maybe a sporting star. Are these people around? Yes they are. Look back at 2012 and whilst we were lucky to have hosted London Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games and did these events have inspiring people? Well ok, there was a few celebrities thrown in (& some guests of corporate sponsors too) but the public nominated over 8,000 local heroes to carry the Olympic Torch to over 1,000 locations around the United Kingdom and many people took in the four festival events bringing the four torches to Stoke Mandeville for the Paralympic Torch Relay into London.

These were people who were invited that were considered to be inspirers, so if people can see and recognise local heroes why don’t they use them as inspiration instead of these “so-called” celebrities? Is it that these people are seen as a quick route to fame, success and money? No not at all – sorry it is! Yes, it is because of right place/right time and you grab fame – all five minutes of it! So, no not at all is valid as where are they now? This five minutes comes and goes and when they are finished, it is over excepted behaving badly or trying to keep themselves in the Tabloids!

So please organisers, stop making events, headline grabbing or ways to make money via sponsorship or tickets sales by using these so-called celebrities or (as the Tabloids call them) Z Listers to attract people to the event and not distract away from what the core values of the event are.

If we are to make Britain Positive or Great again, we need to inspire and enable the children of today by showing them and introducing them to these inspiring local or real life heroes – not these people!

So, please think and inspire not only your children but family and friends to really make a lasting difference…..

Drinking…..what impact it can have on our lives…..

Well you come through those teenage years discovering yourself, what you like and don’t like. All of which, then lays the basis of what you do in those latter teen years – whether it be continuing playing the sport you did during school and taking it more seriously; getting ready to go away to college or university and learning to live on your own or maybe taking those first steps on the road to employment…….the one thing these all have in common (well two at least actually) are drink and relationships – well those two in a way actually merge into one…..

We enter into a life of saying that we will not drink, we can handle the drink and drink doesn’t affect us but actually when you look back, it really does……remember your first dance or kiss, was it fueled by (or in part) alcohol? How many relationships have started by casually meeting someone when you had a drink? Did a relationship start because you had slightly had too much to drink (or enough to make you brave enough to ask them out or if they wanted drink) and that lead to the start of dating? Or, did you go steps too far (as some may say) by both of you being very drunk and waking up next to each other whilst not fully remembering what happened the night before……

These encounters can take one of either two routes – one that can lead to a relationship for many years or even a lifelong commitment to love or partnership/marriage. The other route, is one of bouncing from relationship to relationship without settling down and having the opportunity to make a commitment.

So then, why do we never learn about the effects that drink can cause? And is it just drink related? Actually no it isn’t! Just sit back and think/contemplate what you do in life that mirrors drinking/relationships….

Those drunken episodes where the alcohol fuels us to have courage to speak to that person, is just the same as those endorphin’s that are released giving us a natural high on the first day of our new job…..don’t they sound familiar?

See the similarities? That is because life outside of our working careers actually does mirror each other.

So, sit back, grab a piece of paper and draw a line vertically down the page. Then, starting on the left hand side, sit back and compare where you are now to where you have come from since leaving school. Write down what you have done work wise from leaving secondary school to where you are working today….

Now, on the right hand side of the paper, write down your relationship history starting from school until where you are now…….

Then, the third and final part, down the centre line, write down your holidays too.

Now, leave it, walk away and take a break from what you have just wrote, clear your mind so you can come back with a clear and open mind to concentrate on what you have done.

The next time you pick up the piece of paper, look at where your relationships started or a new job started – what do you remember? Were you on a natural high from what you can recollect? Now if you look at your holidays, did they tie in with a relationship or job starting?

Now, you then sit back and look, where has alcohol been involved? Has it had an impact on any those things you wrote? The start or end of a relationship, the start or end of a job or could it have happened on your holiday? Did alcohol play a major part on any of these events? But why? How do these things happen?

When you look around it seems that our culture and what we do or achieve, does seem to be influenced by alcohol – yet why? Why do we do this? No, I am not advocating stopping drinking but what I am saying is we need look around……..

Looking at other countries, they do not seem to have the drinking culture we have, they do not seem to have issues like we do here and yes whilst economic issues seem to be common place, the common theme seems to be “Broken Britain”……is alcohol behind it…….

So now, stop, think and contemplate where you are wanting to go, what you are wanting to achieve…..

Making your decisions with a clear head and open mind is the key to your future and success. As I know I have made mistakes, but no more, time to start again and this time, for it to be bigger and better than before….

Market Research and LinkedIn….think before you make that call…..

A wonderful question that I was asked and I thought I would ask it back to you all in the community here….

“Why are you on LinkedIn and what is the benefit for you? Maybe you might find the benefits much more rewarding if you upgraded?”

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #Anonymous #LinkedIn #Viewing

Your thoughts……

So, the side issue to asking this came from the following:-

I received a telephone call today from someone, asking what I did and whether they can help by offering myself Social Media Training and specifically, training on LinkedIn and how I would benefit from some of their training.

When I asked why they thought this, they said that they had read my profile and contacted myself to help me use LinkedIn better as I obviously needed help with it! So when I ask about the people viewing my page does this get recognised? They said with their help, they could get me into the top 20 % of the most viewed profiles in the world this year.

I was surprised that they could make a claim so bold and wanted to know how they can see this working if I would get rewarded for this? They said that LinkedIn would reward and promote myself in January to this fact. So, I said that I am interested and would they review my profile and come back to myself with:-

  • a report on what is wrong with my profile
  • how they can change this
  • how they can improve my profile
  • how long it will take
  • a quotation based on what is required

I still can’t work out how they got my details to ring me after viewing myself on LinkedIn but I await to see what they will come back with…..I doubt they will……..

Note:-

The reason for doubting they will come back, is simple, if they had read my profile on LinkedIn, they:-

  • Would have seen my headline
  • My headline clearing stating that I was in the Top 1% of most viewed profiles on LinkedIn last year
  • I do offer Social Media advice, help, training and management
  • I also offer Sales Training too
  • LinkedIn do indeed send out confirmation (well they did this year) to you about your profile every so often, but I only have heard of and seen, Top 10%, 7%, 5%, 3% and 1%

So, a word of advice to any one out there who is looking to do cold calling today, this week or this month…..

RESEARCH THE PERSON YOU ARE RINGING BEFORE YOU SPEAK TO THEM……………………………………

If you have any questions either contact myself via here or complete the form below:-

As one finishes, another one begins…..and into Quarter 1 or is it Quarter 2?

So, what do I write? Am I writing about what has occurred in Quarter 1 or was it Quarter 4?

Many people when writing always seem to relate to time in relation to the year, seasons and what is happening but sometimes may drop in the odd comment about quarters – yet what are quarters?

Well for me, I think quarters are driven by work however, they not only relate to work but our life yet these are not really discussed by many – why not? In every day of our life, everything we do is determined not only by the money we have but those around us and our country.

So, if things around us are driven by money, why don’t we pay more attention to the whole picture and not us being selfish towards thinking of just ourselves? Hence, we need to think of quarters in relation to work as this does really have a great impact on our everyday lives.

So in essence, why sit back and think in quarters? Is it because, yes we could think of months but what happens if a small thing can make a big change to what we are doing that month? Thus we end up behind schedule and then fighting to play catch up?

So by thinking months, we aren’t creating a leap into a quarter and once you have landed in that a quarter – you have created thirteen weeks of business scheduling and planning – confusing? Now you have taken your thirteen weeks, you work out where you want to be in week fourteen – have you done that? Still confused?

By thinking in quarters, you can plan more effectively and break things down from there and work backwards. Now you know where you need to be, do you know what you need to do? Write everything day from what you need to earn, to what needs doing, what sales must be made (especially if these sales are restricted by sell by dates), etc, etc, as a list and start working you way through them. That is setting your goals simply for the quarter and if something happens, the list is still there to work on the next day.

One important thing though, make sure you have put an item in week six for setting next quarters goals. Always do this around week six as this is vital to the next stage of your business. Not only is this important because you can hit next quarter running without having to work out what you need to do for that quarter but what happens when a list is finished?

Set your goals to be realistic and achievable – you could put in one or two that you know will take two or three-quarters (maybe more) to achieve – as you need to get them done and completed successfully within the thirteen weeks. Now if you are lucky to have done that, next quarter’s list is done in week six and is sat ready for you to start……

So just remember those 5p’s as they will focus you from days to weeks to months to quarters to half years to years……….welcome to the world and life of business………
