2014 – what is inspiring or influential?

Quite interesting that just before or after Christmas, and the same can be said for New Year; lists start to appear (and yes, before you say it, I did do one but mine was around the end of November and then has been updated since) which show you the ‘movers and shakers‘, ‘top people, men or women‘, ‘influential people‘ or ‘inspiring people‘ but…….

What are these?

Having spent last year seeing people “self promoting” saying they were on this list and that list and at this position. But what are they? Do you actually really look at these people and their backgrounds?

That is why I did my list back in November and mine was based on people who I found actually to be inspiring and that had interacted with myself (ie we exchanged messages, emails and/or telephone calls), thus meaning I wanted to share these people with you as they actually are people over robots!

Apologies if you are on a list and feel I have called you a robot, but my reason is simple…..

INTERACTION!!

Just look at these lists and these people you see on there, they are coming across just totally one-sided in my opinion in most cases. Have you looked at the profiles and what they are sending? In most cases, from what I have seen, they:-

  • Post several times an hour
  • Each and every hour 
  • Seven days a week
  • Thus – they are constant posting, just pumping out information over and over again, do you see this from top business people or entrepreneurs?
  • Look back at the posts – they are repeated each week, over the fortnight or month – repetitive?
  • When you see their posts, are they up to date? Look at the  links and blogs – see the dates on them
  • When you see their posts, you will see people have commented or shared them – yet how often is there a reply/response from the person posting
  • Lots of the posts that are posted, in some cases, are their clients work, so they are posting work for their clients that they have done, to gain more exposure for their clients – but is this right? Does this help you or them?

So, when you see these lists, actually consider the bigger picture…..

Whilst these people have got on to these lists by sharing lots of information which yes is of interest and benefit in some cases, but can they really help me? That is the question you need to ask yourself…

If they don’t speak to hardly anyone, will they interact me? You need to interact with people and the best influencers for you and your business are people who you engage with….

Just look at your business, if you didn’t communicate with your prospects, they wouldn’t become clients and these clients wouldn’t buy from you and thus, you would have no sales and no income! Meaning……

NO JOB or MONEY

So, when looking at these lists, make sure you are choosing the right people to spend time with. Yes you can follow these people to learn and share some of their posts but you need to interact with influencers….

Don’t just take my word for it, look at my list and just see who they are and how they interact…..

A wonderful question that I was asked and I thought I would ask it back to you all in the community here….

“Why are you on LinkedIn and what is the benefit for you? Maybe you might find the benefits much more rewarding if you upgraded?”

Your thoughts……

So, the side issue to asking this came from the following:-

I received a telephone call today from someone, asking what I did and whether they can help by offering myself Social Media Training and specifically, training on LinkedIn and how I would benefit from some of their training.

When I asked why they thought this, they said that they had read my profile and contacted myself to help me use LinkedIn better as I obviously needed help with it! So when I ask about the people viewing my page does this get recognised? They said with their help, they could get me into the top 20 % of the most viewed profiles in the world this year.

I was surprised that they could make a claim so bold and wanted to know how they can see this working if I would get rewarded for this? They said that LinkedIn would reward and promote myself in January to this fact. So, I said that I am interested and would they review my profile and come back to myself with:-

  • a report on what is wrong with my profile
  • how they can change this
  • how they can improve my profile
  • how long it will take
  • a quotation based on what is required

I still can’t work out how they got my details to ring me after viewing myself on LinkedIn but I await to see what they will come back with…..I doubt they will……..

Note:-

The reason for doubting they will come back, is simple, if they had read my profile on LinkedIn, they:-

  • Would have seen my headline
  • My headline clearing stating that I was in the Top 1% of most viewed profiles on LinkedIn last year
  • I do offer Social Media advice, help, training and management
  • I also offer Sales Training too
  • LinkedIn do indeed send out confirmation (well they did this year) to you about your profile every so often, but I only have heard of and seen, Top 10%, 7%, 5%, 3% and 1%

So, a word of advice to any one out there who is looking to do cold calling today, this week or this month…..

Catch up on the week that was……..

So here we are on a late Saturday afternoon with time to reflect on the week that was but how do I reflect? Do I just say what I feel or should I be open or play it safe……

One thing I wonder, is if I should scream and shout more? I feel that people take you for being you and what you want people to believe you are! One thing I do is work – why do I work?

Well, it is simple, I was educated through school, college, some university and my working career by various companies and some amazing individuals. I was able to attend some top courses, seminars, talks, launches and dinners which have had management, Peer’s, Industry Leaders, Business Owner’s & Leaders together with celebrities, sports stars and inspirational speakers/motivators and oh some top sales trainers too. Why do I mention this? Putting it simply, I have done or experienced more than most, whilst I hear and see others sing, dance, shout whilst also getting others to sing their praises when they have done nothing like I have, experienced what I have or been in a room where you experience the vibes, energy and motivation that these events generate!

On reflection, am I jealous or annoyed that these people are considered more successful than myself because they have more ‘likes’, friends or followers than myself? No, why should I be! If they want to spend all their time reading books, reading the internet or watching videos, YouTube or Hangouts – then fair play to them but wanting to do this and be one-dimensional as they say….let them walk the walk & talk the talk…..

Actually, I feel sorry for their so-called fans, followers, tribes, supporters or what ever you want call them! Why, well it is simple, I have worked and experienced what I talk about and provide – these people haven’t! Does this remind you of the saying….

“Those that can – can! And those that can’t – teach!’

So I will leave you one this one thought or should I say contemplation……

You are ill, poorly, hurt or injured – so you go to a nurse, doctor, surgeon at a Doctor’s Surgery or a Hospital because you need the best to treat you as after all they have been trained and allowed to practice because they are not self-taught!!! So if they can’t be self-taught to look after and treat you, your partner, your family…………

Why do you let self-taught people tell you how to run or advise you about your business………….
