So you are online – but are you? How did you get there?

Are you really on-line?

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #SocialMedia #Social-Media

Who put you there?

I Am An Expert

If someone helped you – what made you use them?

These are just some of the wonderful questions I get asked or people discuss with myself quite often. It is really surprising how many people are now jumping on the band wagon of being a “Social Media Expert”, “Social Media Guru”, “Social Media Marketer”, “Social Media SEO Expert”, “On-Line Expert”, “Marketing Expert”….the list can go on and on….

I Am An SEO Expert

Whilst I don’t proclaim to be an expert, what I do is look at the market and the future and not just say “Are you on LinkedIn?”, “You need Facebook“, “You need Twitter“, are you here or there or everywhere – trends are not always KEY!

A recent article by Philip Calvert highlighted this topic substantially when he wrote about a company saying that don’t reply to people tweeting their company as they don’t take them seriously – why? Is this just their thoughts or were they advised this way? Where are their marketing department?

With the future moving faster than you know (you may say this is not the case but do you really know what is happening behind the scenes?) and this is becoming more and apparent in the developing world and emerging markets. Whilst here we are in the United KingdomScandinavia, parts of Europe and the United States with some of the fastest possible broadband/internet access available, do you know we are so far behind in other areas and hence no doubt you business is too….

For example, do you know where you customers are? How far away from your premises are they? Are they less than 100 metres or approaching you? I am not talking about knowing their location or email address, I mean actually in PERSON!

Most of you will have seen (and maybe fed up by now) of me constantly going on about ENGAGE, ENGAGEMENT, INTERACTION, LOCATION MARKETING and MOBILE MARKETING and here is why….

This aspect of location/mobile marketing is not here now but it is already here in India and other parts of Asia. They know when their clients are nearby. They can anticipate and be ready if a client turns up. And yet most people would say these areas are and could be considered third world regions by comparison. They say that India only has 13% internet penetration whilst here in the United Kingdom we have 75%!

Why I am saying this, simply put, do your so called “experts” and “influencers” fully understand where the world is going?  Make sure you really know their background and don’t get sucked in by a cheap or low-cost solution….

And before you say it, no I am not bitter or having a dig at certain people – I am just highlighting the issues that many experts I know share with myself. Why do they share this with me, because whilst we may compete in some areas – the main thing is that we actually share or work in collaboration plus we work together behind the scenes to help make sure we all are ready to be able to help all our prospects and clients.

Real experts and influencers work together – not compete!

So, think about who you are using and just maybe, seek the opinions of other experts and influencers to make sure you are being taken on the right path of delivering the future now to your business….

2014 – what is inspiring or influential?

IanMCalvert ServiceAddress TheSocialPiggy Influencer SocialMedia Lists

Quite interesting that just before or after Christmas, and the same can be said for New Year; lists start to appear (and yes, before you say it, I did do one but mine was around the end of November and then has been updated since) which show you the ‘movers and shakers‘, ‘top people, men or women‘, ‘influential people‘ or ‘inspiring people‘ but…….

What are these?

Having spent last year seeing people “self promoting” saying they were on this list and that list and at this position. But what are they? Do you actually really look at these people and their backgrounds?

That is why I did my list back in November and mine was based on people who I found actually to be inspiring and that had interacted with myself (ie we exchanged messages, emails and/or telephone calls), thus meaning I wanted to share these people with you as they actually are people over robots!

IanMCalvert ServiceAddress TheSocialPiggy Influence Lists

Apologies if you are on a list and feel I have called you a robot, but my reason is simple…..

INTERACTION!!

Just look at these lists and these people you see on there, they are coming across just totally one-sided in my opinion in most cases. Have you looked at the profiles and what they are sending? In most cases, from what I have seen, they:-

  • Post several times an hour
  • Each and every hour
  • Seven days a week
  • Thus – they are constant posting, just pumping out information over and over again, do you see this from top business people or entrepreneurs?
  • Look back at the posts – they are repeated each week, over the fortnight or month – repetitive?
  • When you see their posts, are they up to date? Look at the  links and blogs – see the dates on them
  • When you see their posts, you will see people have commented or shared them – yet how often is there a reply/response from the person posting
  • Lots of the posts that are posted, in some cases, are their clients work, so they are posting work for their clients that they have done, to gain more exposure for their clients – but is this right? Does this help you or them?

So, when you see these lists, actually consider the bigger picture…..

Whilst these people have got on to these lists by sharing lots of information which yes is of interest and benefit in some cases, but can they really help me? That is the question you need to ask yourself…

If they don’t speak to hardly anyone, will they interact me? You need to interact with people and the best influencers for you and your business are people who you engage with….

Just look at your business, if you didn’t communicate with your prospects, they wouldn’t become clients and these clients wouldn’t buy from you and thus, you would have no sales and no income! Meaning……

NO JOB or MONEY

So, when looking at these lists, make sure you are choosing the right people to spend time with. Yes you can follow these people to learn and share some of their posts but you need to interact with influencers….

Don’t just take my word for it, look at my list and just see who they are and how they interact…..

So, if you want to discuss this further and see how I can help you, either contact myself here or complete and submit the form below:-

Let your critics and doubters create your 2014……

*-*

It’s 2014 and yep – your doubters and critics are here too….

*-*

So they are here to throw doubt at you and try to spread comments about you

Thus casting doubt on your image and reputation

*-*

Well don’t let the doubters get to you….

As they are there to help make you grow and develop……

*-*

Here is how your doubters can help you and you can help them…….

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #PathToYourFuture

When people throw stones at you trying to smash the windows to your future, grab those stones and use them to build the path to the future of your success

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #BuildingAHouse

Whilst our critics and doubters stand there and throw bricks at us, we are the ones to catch those bricks and use them to build the foundations for the house of our dreams

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #TheDoorwayToSuccess

Your doorway to your future success is the opportunity your doubters are missing out on!

That is why there is no door.

It is the open doorway that you give to allow your doubters the opportunity to join you on your path to success…….

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #AddADoorToGetPeopleKnockingYourDoor

Creating a doorway to the future, is the way for you to move on and leave your doubters behind

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #KnockOnMyDoor

With no-one knocking at your door, build a door for them to knock.

When they knock, open it and then they can enter your world of success leaving your critics behind

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #KnockTheDoorToEnterYourFuture

Adding a door to the doorway to your future, means people have to knock before you then open your doorway.

Only letting people through the door are the ones you want to join you on your path to success.

Thus leaving your doubters behind the closed door…….

-<*>-

#CreatingASuccessful2014 #IanMCalvert #ServiceAddress #BlackHole #Doubters

Leaving your doubters behind in their black hole allows you to explore the universe of success and create the future others will want to join you in

-<*>-

I trust these images and words show that you have the ability to turn the negatives – that your critics and doubters throw at you – into the positives that will inspire others to come and join you in making 2014 a successful year….

Are you a taker? Do you ever share? Are you Engaging?

Are you really an Engager?

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #Social-Engagement #Listen-Share-Engage

If I asked your clients or followers – would they say are a Giver, Taker or an actually Engager?

So when trying to educate yourself – do you use Social Media?

Facebook? Google+? LinkedIn? Twitter?

One of the key things about establishing yourself or your company via any of the Social Media platforms, is to create “Engagement”. This interaction called “Engagement” is a two-way thing, however, within the Social Media environment it can be one-sided, none more so than when people seem to reach the top and become “Influencer’s” or “Expert’s”!!

I thought I may just explain about “Engagement” and how it can (or should I say) work. When “Engagement” takes place, it is because two people interact between each other. The interaction is where you make exchanges and communicate, thus “Engaging” in discussion on a variety of topics. The “Engagement” process is directly between two people directly thus creating a partnership….

However, within the medium that is Social Media, the process of “Engagement” seems to take two strands, depending on where you are and what you are doing. Let me explain this via a split explanation:-

– When you are small (ie you have ten’s or hundred’s of followers and you follow them back (ie matching one to one of followers to following), you talk and exchange information regularly. You may not do it on every point, but if you are on-line ( or if using lists* ) then you interact with these people in real-time based on the messages or status updates you see. This is just like  “Engagement” and is at the top – so you could first layer interaction. You may even get some comments from the connections of your first layer – thus these are your second and third layers. Thus, the more and more interaction, the better you can gain rankings through platforms like Klout** and Kred** to increase your scores. Most people with good interaction always levitate between 45 and 60 using Klout** scoring.

OR

– If you look at the larger people with the Social Media industry, (i.e people with thousands, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of followers), have you noticed how many they follow back? Sometimes it is less than 2,000 but most of the time 1,000. Or in some cases, some of these “Influencer’s” or “Expert’s” actually do follow back one to one. Now the way most of these people engage, is by sharing information with you which you then share and then your connections share too. Thus the first, second and sometimes third layers share this information which is creating their “Engagement”.

Now, the interaction of the lower layers circulating and sharing the information is creating the “Engagement”, which leads to creating positive influencing scores on Klout** or Kred**. Furthermore, whilst you maybe following them (and they might be following you back), have you actually noticed if they ever re-tweet or comment on your posts? Yes, it could be said they have many followers and can’t reply to every message, but how many do they actually reply to? Take a look, look at some of the people you follow and their timeline, how many of their messages are Re-Tweets or replies to people? Is this really “Engagement” if they are not interacting? Isn’t this one-sided?

So what should be thinking or doing?

The process of “Engagement” is the main key to getting everything set in place is to help you and your business grow. The main key is “Engagement” – you must engage to develop and keep being fresh. Too many people just constantly post, re-post and never engage – just think of doing that in your business, what would happen if you just communicated one way and never listened to your clients or prospective clients? You wouldn’t have a business at all – do you know of or can name a business with no interaction that is in business?

Whilst following influential people on Twitter or liking and following their pages on Facebook, may provide nuggets of information which are educational and help you to learn things, is this the right way forward? Did you ever learn anything at school, college or university by being just spoken too or receiving dictation without being able to ask questions back? No you didn’t – so the real position is to make sure you surround yourself with people you can communicate with on a regular basis – after-all communication is a two-way street……does this remind you of something?

“Engagement”

So, whilst it may not always be possible, let me give you a few helpful hints and tips:-

Facebook:-

  • When people start following your page, always send them a thank you
  • If people like a comment, you may not be able to thank everyone back, but post a thank you message so the interaction is seen and they know that you are seeing the likes
  • Comments, try to reply to the comments on the post that people put there. As after-all they could be your next paying client or through the exchange of comments, you may learn something which can help you grow and succeed more.

LinkedIn:-

  • When people start ask to connect with you, when you accept, send them a thank you and introduction message explaining about yourself
  • If someone ask’s to connect with you, wonder why they are doing it? They are obviously wanting to connect for a reason but why? So, why don’t you accept them and then send them a message, thanking them for asking to connect with you and why they wanted to connect? When they reply, you can then make the judgement as to whether to retain them as a connection
  • When you see a post that you like or find interesting, why not share it with your connections, as if you find it useful, they may too. When you share this, be sure to include the name of the person you are sharing it from. This creates “Engagement” and shows your connections where you are learning from
  • If your sharing something or you find it of interest, like it and/or comment on it as this will create “Engagement” with that person and their connections will see you and may wish to connect with you – these connections could become your connections and future clients

Twitter:-

  • Twitter is all about posting and sharing information – so if people share (ie Re-Tweet) your posts, thank them thus you are creating “Engagement”
  • If people comment on one of your posts, then reply to them and start engaging
  • If people follow you, always thank them for following and it shows you are communicating and engaging with them

All these points I have mentioned are all about communicating and thus you are creating “Engagement” with your audience which is your first layer and become to form part of your Circle of Influence.

So, if you are wanting to expand your Circle of Influence and develop further interaction with your audience, then start the interaction process and communicate.

You will have noticed (and probably said, not that word again) but look at the title – Are you a taker? Do you ever share? Are you Engaging? – this whole post has been about “Engagement” which is the key buzz word and what you should be doing during. Therefore, make sure you start 2014 by……………..

ENGAGING

Are you Showcasing?

So does your business Showcase?

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #LinkedIn #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #ShowcasePages #Showcase-Pages

With LinkedIn launching Showcase pages recently, have you implemented these into your business strategy yet? If not – why not?

The real benefit that many people have not seen or grasped yet, is how you can really develop so much of other parts of your business that you have or offer but people aren’t really aware of.

Showcasing enables you to allow people to really drill down into various ares of your company and can offer whilst you are able to promote aspects of your business you are always doing or offering but you just do or offer as a matter of course….

What are people missing?

What is there that a Showcase can offer?

Why should I have one?

Simple – it is you having the sole unique method of claiming what everyone is looking for via LinkedIn. When people are after something or looking for a service/product, they then search and what will they find? Your LinkedIn Showcase which gives you the advantage. Furthermore, your Showcase is showing not only about your services, offerings and products in a unique way but provides the latest news and information that details everything to your audience and your Peer’s too.

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #LinkedIn #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #ShowcasePages #Showcase-Pages

So what do you need to do? Firstly you need to have your Company Profile which is where you want everything, so when they require more information, people can see everything your company does and also, all information about the company too. If this is going back to a different section or part of your company, you may wish to consider setting up a separate Company Profile to suit your needs that you are promoting.

Once you have the Company Profile set up, then decide which area you want to promote and inform you audience about. (Remember, if you want to Showcase many areas of your business, you can have up to 10 Showcases attached to your Company Profile – should you wish more, then you can ask LinkedIn to release more). Your Showcase is effectively the landing page for what you are wanting to promote and circulate.

For example, let’s say you are a recruitment company and have your company page. You can have a Showcase on temporary employment and this will be your landing page about this. On your temporary employment Showcase, you will be able to post articles on everything to so with this, ranging from what is the latest laws, what is happening with regards to your rights, items that have been in the news relevant to temporary employment, etc, etc – furthermore, you can have an article on what to look for when looking to register with a recruitment company.

At the end of the day, you are not promoting your company directly but highlighting a part of your business by showcasing this area with the latest news and information on this topic. This helps you to develop much further as an Engager and Influencer, thus creating another level of credibility. Thus, in summary, you are highlighting an area of your industry which your company is well versed in and thus, subliminally guiding them back to your company.

Some examples of Showcase pages include:-

Do you answer or not?

Are you an Engager?

Do you actively participate in your Social Media when people communicate with you?

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #TSP #TheSocialPiggy #The-Social-Piggy #SocialMedia #Social-Media #Interaction

You post a status update or share information, people reply or comment on this, or you notice that they have viewed your profile – do you comment or reply?

One of the major things you hear people complain about when it comes to Social Media, is that sometimes, it is very one-sided, even when your posts, comments and updates are very informative. The question is, do you acknowledge everything and interact?

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #TheSocialPiggy #The-Social-Piggy #SocialMedia #Social-Media

  • On Facebook – people follow you, comment on your posts and like your posts, what do you do?
  • On Instagram – people follow you, like your photo and post a comment, what do you do?
  • On LinkedIn – people view you, people ask to connect to you, like your posts and comment on your posts, what do you do?
  • On Twitter – people follow you, tweet you and re-tweet you, what do you do?

The above are just four examples of Social Media platforms and what happens, so what are your answers to “what do you do”?

  • Do you ignore?
  • Selective answer?
  • Or reply to every thing that people do to your various aspects of Social Media?

When you start becoming very popular and have lots of interaction, at what point do you hold back on replying to everything and thanking people for interacting you?

This can always be a hotly debated topic and one where there is not always a right or wrong answer or is the answer selective based on the platform? Do you reply to everything on LinkedIn but not everything on all the other platforms, for example? Or just reply to everything you are able to, in that moment of time that you have just come on-line for?

At the end of the day – what is important? Is it that you use certain platforms for your business? So you only reply to comments or posts in-connection to your business? Do you acknowledge or thank people who have followed you, liked your items or shared them?

Personally, I think you need to be undertaking, what is of major influence and engaging to help you and your business develop and grow. That way, you are not only learning but you are engaging and influencing with your Circle of Influence to create to a network of connections that truly benefits you.

Anonymous Viewing or LinkedIn Members who wish to remain Anonymous….

Right or Wrong?

Hide your profile or not?

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #Anonymous #LinkedIn #Viewing

Following participation in several forums, help centre questions, numerous tweets and status discussions on my LinkedIn profile with regards to Anonymous viewing, as you may or may not know, I was asked by LinkedIn to take part in a conference call on this topic.

Whilst I know, this may or may not be an issue to people, here in the United Kingdom and also in the United States, there is a growing number of people who are not happy with the features on LinkedIn which enable profiles displaying:-

  • “LinkedIn Member – This member chose to be shown as anonymous”

or

  • “Anonymous Member viewed your profile”

to appear in the section “Who Viewed Your Profile”. This facility is there for members of LinkedIn to utilise but what happens when they do? There are three options:-

  • Your name and headline (Recommended)
    Ian Calvert

    Ian Calvert

*Engage* ^Collaborate^ *Influence* What do these words mean to you? *Top 1% viewed LinkedIn* & *Top 5% Kred 2012″
    Oxford, United Kingdom
  • Anonymous profile characteristics such as industry and title

Note: Selecting this option will disable Profile Stats. Whenever you switch to anonymous, your viewer history gets erased.

No photo

Someone in the Entrepreneur function in the Information Technology and Services industry from Oxford, United Kingdom

  • You will be totally anonymous.

Note: Selecting this option will disable Profile Stats. Whenever you switch to anonymous, your viewer history gets erased.

or Cancel

[ Note:-

These can be turned on and off as required but in my personal opinion you should not be doing this. Why? Well when you change to either of the two Anonymous functions, you disable you Profile Statistics which in turn, affects your rankings. By making this change, when people are looking for you or someone like you in your profession, disabling the Statistics lowers you down the search rankings. So, personally I would not recommend you doing this. ]

OK – now back to the original points and the conference call…….

The main objective of the telephone conference call was to discuss the reason why when people contact LinkedIn, everyone get’s the same message:-

Hi Ian,

Thanks for contacting me.  Thanks for sharing your comments on how we can make LinkedIn better concerning the anonymous viewer feature. Feedback from members like you provides us with insights that identify the needs of our customers. I sent your message to our research and development team for review and consideration in future developments with this feature.Although every idea cannot be individually responded to or implemented, please know that we do monitor suggestions quite closely for recurring themes. I’d like to invite you to follow us on Twitterhttp://twitter.com/linkedin or check out the LinkedIn Blog http://blog.linkedin.com for the latest notifications on site improvements. Both options are great ways to stay informed about new releases and exciting work going on behind the scenes here at LinkedIn.I’m sorry for any inconvenience the anonymous viewer feature has caused
So, standard responses were the main compliant I was receiving from people but also, people were explaining to me, their situation as in:-
  • The idea of people viewing them made them feel uncomfortable
  • Constantly seeing anonymous profiles appearing in their list every day was a concern
  • People who had court orders against people and they did not know if these people were viewing thus breaking the law and the order
  • (Also, when they explained this to LinkedIn, they did not care or comment – in most cases they replied with the same standard response)
  • People that were being harassed by people were concerned that these people were viewing them
  • (Again, when they explained this to LinkedIn, they did not care or comment – in most cases they replied with the same standard response)
  • Being driven out of their previous job by staff and/or management – they didn’t know if it was these people or person viewing them

I put all these points to the people at LinkedIn during the conference call and they could understand where people’s’ concerns and issues were coming from. They informed me, they were already looking into this, seeing if, there is a way, facilities could be developed to improve the reporting process. They then explained that this reporting process, is already currently being reviewed and due to the roll out, of placing the “Help facility/centre” on to mobile and tablet devices like it is on the desktop version, they could not disclose a time frame.

Now the other side….
With the background of LinkedIn evolving from the recruitment industry (that we all believe and understand was origins of LinkedIn), they explained why this feature was in place:-
  • Recruiters, when looking for potential candidates to “head-hunt”, for positions they have to fill, like this facility, so they can view potential candidates that fall within their search results
  • By viewing the person anonymously, they can then decide which person they then contact. This is as some people they view, may not be suitable for the positions they have available
  • If their viewing was Public, then the people they had viewed, could be contacting them directly. When the recruiters feel that they are not suitable candidates, they do not want these candidates contacting them
  • Companies or recruiters, when they have received Curriculum Vitae‘s  (CV’s) or Job Applications, will use this facility to review the candidate to compare what information they have provided is the same as what they portray on LinkedIn
  • Furthermore, they can actually see more information on person applying as to the type of person they are by their activity etc

So now the two sides of the argument have been put forward…….

In summary, both sides seem to have very valid points as why the Anonymous should or shouldn’t be in place – which is or who is, right on this topic?

Personally, from my point of view, I do feel that there should be a feature where you can opt to block people, who are viewing/looking at you Anonymously. We are all professional people and we are using this site to network and create our Circles of Influence.

For example, if we were at a networking event (which after all, it is our decision to attend), see and meet other professional people, it is our decision as to whether we talk to them or exchange contact details. Thus, I feel the same function should be available to us. We should have the right as to who views our profile or not on LinkedIn as we would if we were at a Networking event.

As a result, I put this point across to LinkedIn and they did say that this was something that they were looking into and would raise this at their product development meetings that are taking place.

I asked that they raise this as a matter of concern, and would they be able to say when an answer / solution would be known? They said, that after their meetings, they would come back to myself with some answers and updates shortly, so as soon as I hear anything or receive further updates, I will share these with you all.
