Market Research and LinkedIn….think before you make that call…..

A wonderful question that I was asked and I thought I would ask it back to you all in the community here….

“Why are you on LinkedIn and what is the benefit for you? Maybe you might find the benefits much more rewarding if you upgraded?”

Your thoughts……

So, the side issue to asking this came from the following:-

I received a telephone call today from someone, asking what I did and whether they can help by offering myself Social Media Training and specifically, training on LinkedIn and how I would benefit from some of their training.

When I asked why they thought this, they said that they had read my profile and contacted myself to help me use LinkedIn better as I obviously needed help with it! So when I ask about the people viewing my page does this get recognised? They said with their help, they could get me into the top 20 % of the most viewed profiles in the world this year.

I was surprised that they could make a claim so bold and wanted to know how they can see this working if I would get rewarded for this? They said that LinkedIn would reward and promote myself in January to this fact. So, I said that I am interested and would they review my profile and come back to myself with:-

  • a report on what is wrong with my profile
  • how they can change this
  • how they can improve my profile
  • how long it will take
  • a quotation based on what is required

I still can’t work out how they got my details to ring me after viewing myself on LinkedIn but I await to see what they will come back with…..I doubt they will……..

Note:-

The reason for doubting they will come back, is simple, if they had read my profile on LinkedIn, they:-

  • Would have seen my headline
  • My headline clearing stating that I was in the Top 1% of most viewed profiles on LinkedIn last year
  • I do offer Social Media advice, help, training and management
  • I also offer Sales Training too
  • LinkedIn do indeed send out confirmation (well they did this year) to you about your profile every so often, but I only have heard of and seen, Top 10%, 7%, 5%, 3% and 1%

So, a word of advice to any one out there who is looking to do cold calling today, this week or this month…..

RESEARCH THE PERSON YOU ARE RINGING BEFORE YOU SPEAK TO THEM……………………………………

Business Insurance…..

On LinkedIn this morning,  James Day of Ingenious Britain provided an interesting article  about Business Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance to which made me think about something I have often come across – why do I do things legally when others around me don’t!

My reply to James was:-

James – I think this is a much bigger issue than just employing people. How many companies do you actually work with, recommend and endorse that do not have business insurance at all? So many people operate in the world of business without insurance and yet provide businesses with advice and services. This really should be mandatory and any person or business employing the services of someone (or a company) should ask to see their insurance before engaging with them.

Is it right that companies should operate without the necessary qualifications and insurance to offer advice, support, services and products without this? What happens if that business (or person) does something that can damage your both your reputation and company? What leg do you have to stand on?

When I started in business I took advice from someone who I have known for a few years but we never spoke business just were good friends. I asked Dan McDonald about insurance and he thoroughly asked what I was doing and wanted to do. Only then after understanding what I did, he explained what I needed and as a result, without me asking, he speaks to me every 8 to 10 weeks to see what I am doing to make sure my insurance is right for myself, my business and more importantly my clients. As a result, last year, when I encountered some computer virus’s and lost a lot of data, on the next phone call, Dan immediately told me to not do anything until he came and saw me. Now, as a result if anything happens, I am fully covered via IPS protection against Data lost, damage, hacking or spamming due to holding client Data and this is something I would never of thought about, yet Dan wasn’t thinking of me, he was thinking about my clients and I needed to be protected to protect them.

Note:- (By the way, before any one says anything, this blog is about me, my experiences and views and not endorsing or recommending either James Day or Dan McDonald but all I will say, is that I met and had dealings with both people and say to you, that it would worth you speaking to both these people as James can help you with advice about what is happening in the business world and Dan can help you with your insurance questions).

Therefore, whether you think your current suppliers are doing a great job or not – check do they have the correct insurance? What happens if something goes wrong can you re-cover these costs from that person or company?

So, with it nearly being lunchtime now, just think over lunch about this and then think of the people you are working with this afternoon and contemplate this, the work they are doing for you goes wrong, it causes major problems, are you covered or not? It is worth considering…….

Out of your depth……

I had someone send me this morning and I decided to share it on Facebook which generated a good discussion, so after a few comments this afternoon on other topics, I thought I would share this here and share a few comments…..

How many Social Media consultants does it take to change a light bulb?

None.

“Look, if all you’re thinking about is changing the light bulb, you’re missing the point. The idea is to first lurk around in the room and watch other people changing light bulbs.

Then, start providing commentary and encouragement to those that are changing light bulbs. Then, build relationships with these people in the lighting community.

Then – and only then, should you even think about trying to change the light bulb.”

So, the comments that came back included:-

  • Or just pinch the lightbulb changing technique and promote it as your own …..
  • Publish books about it, have weekly webinars, call yourself a guru and use buzz words baffling the other even smaller fish in the tiny pond you fish in. All that without actually having done it yourself in any remarkable way.
  • Don’t get me on the fish pond! It’s polluted!
  • I wish I was joking but fact is that you’ll always find people who can be impressed with the veneer presented. Utter lack of integrity with quite a few and I honestly can’t understand how some people say things with a straight face.
  • Oh yes, purport to be successful yet scratch the surface and you find nothing at all to back it up!
  • Just be yourself! Generally people can spot BS at a mile radius!
  • Sadly however people are sucked in … The money just goes round and round. There’s more than one where you’d think they are living in luxury, with expensive cars, holidays and glam life style .. The reality being far from it.
  • Oh for sure – I see it all the time! Most of these ‘so called experts!!’
  • Entrepreneurs are usually in debt up to their eyeballs – trying to impress others with this false status & kudos. It totally baffles me!

The comments above, got me thinking about this, especially following on from my last post! Also, I then saw many tweets appear together with posts on Facebook from various platforms (I must admit to also been guilty of this too!!!) where people are posting their Daily News from Paper.li or Scoop It, to name but a few…..why?

Clearly by posting these, yes you are sharing information! Yes you are potentially expanding your audience! But….oh wait a minute – is this not a form of deceit like mentioned above?

Just think about the above and how you are you sharing things……that is right, you are not! When you set these feeds up, you are asked what interests you and then they pull items and articles from the internet and share them on your behalf! So, is this deceit? Fraud? Misleading?

If you were asked about these posts but you (as you most likely haven’t seen it or read) as you didn’t put it together, wouldn’t know what it said or was included..so this is fake, misleading…..etc……this is not engaging with your audience – is it?

So, think about what you are doing when posting because if you get asked you could end up looking silly or even will share it for you and then the recipients that see it, may ask you things because they think you are experienced in that area but you will end being found out and found to be out of your depth……
