Who or what are Fund Managers, Traders and Investment Managers?

Self serving or Greedy?

#IanCalvert #IanMCalvert #Greed #Bankers #Banks #Investors

Is the technology industry really being held back the greed of Venture Capitalists, Investment Bankers and Speculators?

Recently there has been an abundance of “Money” people appearing in the news, on the radio and on television over the last weeks talking about Apple, Blackberry, Facebook, Google, Lenovo, Microsoft, Motorola and Yahoo amongst many technology and Social Media companies, saying that this needs to be done, this needs to be sold, break this company up, is this the right person etc, etc…..

Hello – why?

Oh, the reason is simple! You are greedy and just want to make money for yourselves in double time! Make money for your clients to get your bonuses plus get rewarded by expanding your client base and all your media appearances and impressions more like!!

As many people  – including myself – have written about this on numerous occasions! Just let’s look at a recent examples…..

  • investors criticising Marissa Mayer for under-performing with generating sales at Yahoo and that was this a signal that Yahoo was going in the wrong direction and maybe she wasn’t doing well! What? This is the person that in the 18 months or so that she has been in charge at Yahoo, she has increased the share price by around 141% – is this not a success? Now who is smart? Marissa Mayer and Yahoo of course….
  • Google moves in the limelight by buying Motorola for $12.5 Billion and everyone thought wow they are moving into mobile phones and then they go and sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for $2.9 Billion along with 2000 patents! Analysts jumping all over the place saying what a mistake Google have made and losing nearly $10 Billion – how wrong were they! Firstly analysts then remembered that Google had already made a deal selling the Motorola set-top box division that when added to the Lenovo deal produces nearly $6 Billion – short memories as they raved about what a good move it was selling the set-top division!  Then later that day, analysts, bankers, investors, etc,etc start releasing details that had been in the public domain starts to finally came out, Google was left with over 15,000 patents! Best not explain what patents are as you will think of money and completely miss the point! Oh and plus during all this deal, they got a sharing deal with Samsung which produced a deal where neither party would sue each other over Patent’s! Now who is smart? Google of course….
  • Then of course there is Lenovo, and such confusion with them here too! Excellent news of Lenovo buying IBM‘s computer division a few years back and disappointment when the IBM‘s small server division sale to Lenovo fell through. Yet joy when that sale reappeared and completed last month together with the above purchase from Google too. Yet now, with rumours circulating that Lenovo will possibly make some more purchases including today’s rumour mill (2012/02/05) that they are likely to announce purchasing the VAIO Computing Business from Sony – what is happening? These same people are now saying too much debt, more borrowing, share dilution, etc, etc… Hang on a minute…. Lenovo has a history of buying divisions or companies which couldn’t make money or are starting to lose money and turning them into profitable operating divisions with Lenovo

There is a bigger picture forming around the Technology and Social Media and this is not money – or is it? Let’s see, companies need to grow, they need to invest and develop new products that are open to two markets. Yes “Money Makers” there is two markets – business and consumers – which need to be both keep separate and in some cases together. So why do you interfere where you don’t understand how business works….

You are slamming mismanagement as to how things have happened at Blackberry yet you are the ones that compared it to Apple and killed the business but blamed management!

Blackberry has always been a business tool over a consumer tool and the majority of all its income came from large Corporate and Government contracts – yet hey….Apple comes along and then you compare it and kill it!

Let me give you a quick lesson………..

  • Blackberry was a telephone with web access and the ability to work with Microsoft on a variety of levels via two platforms in which was the secure network and hence it was used by Governments and Financial sensitivity businesses
  • Apple, was a computer which ran a different computer system to Microsoft and they tried to compete but lost by having to finally allow software that would make Microsoft Office products workable on Apple computers. Then they launched a portable music device – iPod – which then was aimed at the consumer market. Yes the CONSUMER market! With the growth of this, they then looked at adding camera and telephone technology to it and hence the iPhone was born! The Consumer was happy as they could do so much on the move and if you actually look at the iPhone today, you will see that the majority of iPhone‘s usage is actually leisure usage. (A quick lesson for you, leisure time is something we try to find when we aren’t working which I know may be a foreign concept to you!)

So, by you saying that Blackberry is not doing well when comparing the numbers of their handsets against the iPhone, you were comparing figures from High Street telephone retailers – not like for like! As stated above previously, Blackberry‘s are mostly sold by Business (b2b) telephone companies, who do not sell to consumers. With you slating Blackberry and their products (look again at what you did by comparing the Playbook to the iPad) – you destroyed the brand and blamed the management!

Over the last fifteen plus years, you have killed and potentially ruined so many companies by falsely comparing them to the consumer market, commenting on products and services that you don’t understand and trying to make a quick buck by forcing companies to sell divisions which they have then had to buy back later which has cost them more money then they made! Oh, wait you guys made money, so I guess that is OK then…..

In summary, stop being greedy and self-serving Banks, Bankers, Investment Bankers, Investors and Venture Capitalists – leave Social Media and Technology alone….

Social Media and Technology will only grow through development and innovation via the people within these companies and technology experts and users.

Thus, if you want to understand the industry, talk to myself or any of the other experts here that are around with knowledge within Social Media and Technology and we will, by all means, happy to educate you – as you clearly need educating……

Happy birthday Google+ but………

So on Friday (Friday 28th June 2013), we saw the anniversary of it being two years since the launch of Google+ (see Wikipedia) along with people claiming that it has over 359 million actual users – but is this the case?

So, here is something interesting to throw into the mix…..

How many are actual users?

I had a computer crash a few months ago and lost my bookmarks which is a real pain, as this means a link here would be great for this topic, as the link was stating that actual users is a much lesser figure even below 100 million!

The link in summary, laid claim to their reason in stating this figure, being that everything “Google” is linked. So – from memory – if you look at this:-

  • – many people log on to view things on YouTube, because Google owns it and you have an account, these figures are counted
  • – many people log on to view things on Gmail, because Google owns it and you have an account, these figures are counted
  • – many people log on to view things on Google Maps, because Google owns it and you have an account, these figures are counted

Despite been asked by many industry researchers, Google refuses to actually disclose how many actual users they have using just Google+.

Therefore, Google‘s figures have been classed as number which is very misleading whereas transparency is disclosed by Facebook v. Instagram, Twitter v. Vine, Yahoo v. Tumblr, etc, etc,

So really “Google” maybe number two but where actually is Google+? We wait with bated breath to see when and if Google will release the true breakdown of the elements that make up the Google figures…….

Are you listening BBC……. Hello…….. Hello……..

When starting out in business, do you do any research? Or do you just provide what you WANT to your customers (or prospective customers) for them to buy?

In some aspects, provide is right and correct. Such as being a restaurant. You have to provide food for people to come and eat, otherwise why would you open a restaurant?

Or say a rental garage, you have cars but people then ask for estates or vans, so you add these to your fleet. So, by listening, you expanded from cars to cars (hatchbacks, saloons and estates) and vans.

With such a long history of broadcasting, you would think that the BBC would have listened and provided a common platform to deliver the required solution? From the early days of radio broadcasting – which was pioneering – things have evolved but it seems that the BBC haven’t!!!

Yes you – the BBC – gave us radio and provided a news service which what we needed and then followed it by adding entertainment but that was over 70 years ago and you haven’t learnt! Or have you but lost control?

Take a look at what has happened last night (Friday 28th June 2013), people were complaining by using hashtags of #BBCGlasto and #Glastonbury to comment on the BBC coverage and it’s presenters. Why? Well it is simple – advertise one thing and produce or show another! Until the Arctic Monkeys came on at 11.00pm all previous shows where from the afternoon and early evening but nothing live! The use of your “Red button” was on and off – why not constantly on?

The BBC stated that it had learnt from the Olympics and was using this to provide “Digital Glastonbury” but this simply was not the case. The BBC has an unrivaled position in broadcasting my opinion but they just aren’t using it. Take for example BBC three – this channel only broadcasts after 7.00pm yet why? Today is a prime example of what could be done:-

– this morning showing highlights of everything that was performed last night

– this afternoon live coverage

– this evening live coverage

But this doesn’t just stop there, with Digital Television being available, the use of the “Red button”, you can provide lots more too to offer people the choice of watching different stages and then you have radio too, where Radio One could provide complete live coverage too together replays of yesterday performances.

Is this possible? Well, that is why above I stated “Or have you but lost control?” and the reason for this is Glastonbury – a dedicated programme channel that the BBC have set up on the radio section of their website. Alternatively, if you go to iPlayer Radio on their website, you can download their radio app for your mobile phone or tablet. Both of these methods are providing methods of you watching live, listening live, watching recordings, listening to recordings or watching and listening to interviews.

Guess what BBC – the younger generation plus people knowing how internet facilities work are utilising these and you are providing them! Do you know what your different divisions are doing? And this is without including BBC1xtra and BBC6music!

If you are to keep up with the ever-changing, fast-moving world of technology, you need to start delivering what your client base want. You need to listen, learn and deliver. If you can do this on-line, make sure you replicate it as you clearly can – remember the Olympics? You did utilise all the channels and time slots to do deliver this – so why not now…….

Just a thought or you will really disappear and get life behind in this new age of technology…..

So why deliver words which turn out to be hollow and how do you survive in business behaving that way?

One thing that I have come across more and more frequently lately is hollow words…..

Now hollow words is something that you expect from Councillors and Politicians as this is something they seem to relish in especially more after being elected as well as maybe television, film and music celebrities as it seems to be very much in their genes, yet it is becoming more and more prevalent into today’s business marketplace and environment.

With Social Media becoming more and more part of our lives and how it can detail every part of our life, make sure you really put yourself in the  limelight so you don’t seem to swap and change like there is no tomorrow.

Time to be a success does indeed take time  – whilst some ideas or personalities can do this over night – so if you don’t tell a consistent message about what you do or provide, this can lead to doubt’s about your offerings and credibility. Whether via LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and now Google Plus being so open (even though you can restrict access this does not always work), plus people’s greed for success and money – it’s easy for you to be shot down by other’s or by yourself un-intentionally.

So, if you are going to do something, plan what you are going to do over say the next year’s and think this through like this:-

What I am wanting to do over the next three year’s?

– Where do I plan to be in three year’s time?

– What do I need to do over the next three year’s to achieve this?

– What have I  done over the last three year’s to help me achieve this?

– If the last three year’s mirror what you are doing over the next year’s (or similar) – make the message consistent

– If you have done several or many different things over these last three year’s – do they impact or explain what you are planning to do next?

Social Media and on-line information, provides a playground for people to search and research you, so, whilst people may query and question what your work or methods, would you not trust this person more because they have been consistent over the last three year’s with what they offer – over someone who has flitted from one idea to another over the same period?

Can a variety of roles prove to add credibility?  Of course it can, if the message and common theme is clear. Whilst my career may seem to have varied over the last 20 plus odd year’s, each aspect of what I have done and do, all interlinks. And, in times of trouble and hardship, I have still kept a consistent view and message. So yes, I may not be to your cup of tea but the message and offering is consistent and clear from myself and I am able to explain how thing’s all interact.

So, before listening to other’s and being quick to run people down, make sure you speak to that person and understand what they are trying to achieve and offer. If you have something on your mind or can’t understand what they do, have done and through to what they do now, ask them!

Is it not better to hear the truth from the horse’s mouth (so too speak?), so you can fully understand their plan and reasoning and thus help you to plan not only your future but whether this person can be helpful and influential with assisting over your journey over the next three year’s…..

So, never be afraid to ask about someone and see what the truth is instead of just listening to hearsay and gossip – be open transparent. A prime example of this is Nigel Botterill (of N5 Group which includes The Best of Group and The Entrepreneurs Circle ) who is very clear about not only his successes but his failures too plus Brad Burton of 4Networking is also very open about is up and down’s and struggles.

In a nutshell, be clear, be open and honest. You may not be everyone’s cup of tea or flavour of the month, but if your message is clear and very consistent, then your credibility will shine through and silence your doubters. As these people will not have the same as yourself, history which equals credibility.

Remember, what I said I earlier about on-line history? What happens grow’s on-line with yourself. So, if you are open and clear from day one and keep that message consistent, they you are proving a credible past to your future.

If someone bursts on the scene and all over sudden they story appears, does this provide you with credibility to trust this person? Think about it, would you hire, trust or employ someone without knowing their CV or history? Of course not, you what something you check and seek references from.

In essence, make yourself open, transparent and clear because if you don’t – aren’t your words just hollow and what your doubter’s and competition will use against you?

Drinking…..what impact it can have on our lives…..

Well you come through those teenage years discovering yourself, what you like and don’t like. All of which, then lays the basis of what you do in those latter teen years – whether it be continuing playing the sport you did during school and taking it more seriously; getting ready to go away to college or university and learning to live on your own or maybe taking those first steps on the road to employment…….the one thing these all have in common (well two at least actually) are drink and relationships – well those two in a way actually merge into one…..

We enter into a life of saying that we will not drink, we can handle the drink and drink doesn’t affect us but actually when you look back, it really does……remember your first dance or kiss, was it fueled by (or in part) alcohol? How many relationships have started by casually meeting someone when you had a drink? Did a relationship start because you had slightly had too much to drink (or enough to make you brave enough to ask them out or if they wanted drink) and that lead to the start of dating? Or, did you go steps too far (as some may say) by both of you being very drunk and waking up next to each other whilst not fully remembering what happened the night before……

These encounters can take one of either two routes – one that can lead to a relationship for many years or even a lifelong commitment to love or partnership/marriage. The other route, is one of bouncing from relationship to relationship without settling down and having the opportunity to make a commitment.

So then, why do we never learn about the effects that drink can cause? And is it just drink related? Actually no it isn’t! Just sit back and think/contemplate what you do in life that mirrors drinking/relationships….

Those drunken episodes where the alcohol fuels us to have courage to speak to that person, is just the same as those endorphin’s that are released giving us a natural high on the first day of our new job…..don’t they sound familiar?

See the similarities? That is because life outside of our working careers actually does mirror each other.

So, sit back, grab a piece of paper and draw a line vertically down the page. Then, starting on the left hand side, sit back and compare where you are now to where you have come from since leaving school. Write down what you have done work wise from leaving secondary school to where you are working today….

Now, on the right hand side of the paper, write down your relationship history starting from school until where you are now…….

Then, the third and final part, down the centre line, write down your holidays too.

Now, leave it, walk away and take a break from what you have just wrote, clear your mind so you can come back with a clear and open mind to concentrate on what you have done.

The next time you pick up the piece of paper, look at where your relationships started or a new job started – what do you remember? Were you on a natural high from what you can recollect? Now if you look at your holidays, did they tie in with a relationship or job starting?

Now, you then sit back and look, where has alcohol been involved? Has it had an impact on any those things you wrote? The start or end of a relationship, the start or end of a job or could it have happened on your holiday? Did alcohol play a major part on any of these events? But why? How do these things happen?

When you look around it seems that our culture and what we do or achieve, does seem to be influenced by alcohol – yet why? Why do we do this? No, I am not advocating stopping drinking but what I am saying is we need look around……..

Looking at other countries, they do not seem to have the drinking culture we have, they do not seem to have issues like we do here and yes whilst economic issues seem to be common place, the common theme seems to be “Broken Britain”……is alcohol behind it…….

So now, stop, think and contemplate where you are wanting to go, what you are wanting to achieve…..

Making your decisions with a clear head and open mind is the key to your future and success. As I know I have made mistakes, but no more, time to start again and this time, for it to be bigger and better than before….

Market Research and LinkedIn….think before you make that call…..

A wonderful question that I was asked and I thought I would ask it back to you all in the community here….

“Why are you on LinkedIn and what is the benefit for you? Maybe you might find the benefits much more rewarding if you upgraded?”

#IanCalvert #Ian-Calvert #IanMCalvert #Ian-M-Calvert #ServiceAddress #Service-Address #Anonymous #LinkedIn #Viewing

Your thoughts……

So, the side issue to asking this came from the following:-

I received a telephone call today from someone, asking what I did and whether they can help by offering myself Social Media Training and specifically, training on LinkedIn and how I would benefit from some of their training.

When I asked why they thought this, they said that they had read my profile and contacted myself to help me use LinkedIn better as I obviously needed help with it! So when I ask about the people viewing my page does this get recognised? They said with their help, they could get me into the top 20 % of the most viewed profiles in the world this year.

I was surprised that they could make a claim so bold and wanted to know how they can see this working if I would get rewarded for this? They said that LinkedIn would reward and promote myself in January to this fact. So, I said that I am interested and would they review my profile and come back to myself with:-

  • a report on what is wrong with my profile
  • how they can change this
  • how they can improve my profile
  • how long it will take
  • a quotation based on what is required

I still can’t work out how they got my details to ring me after viewing myself on LinkedIn but I await to see what they will come back with…..I doubt they will……..

Note:-

The reason for doubting they will come back, is simple, if they had read my profile on LinkedIn, they:-

  • Would have seen my headline
  • My headline clearing stating that I was in the Top 1% of most viewed profiles on LinkedIn last year
  • I do offer Social Media advice, help, training and management
  • I also offer Sales Training too
  • LinkedIn do indeed send out confirmation (well they did this year) to you about your profile every so often, but I only have heard of and seen, Top 10%, 7%, 5%, 3% and 1%

So, a word of advice to any one out there who is looking to do cold calling today, this week or this month…..

RESEARCH THE PERSON YOU ARE RINGING BEFORE YOU SPEAK TO THEM……………………………………

If you have any questions either contact myself via here or complete the form below:-

As one finishes, another one begins…..and into Quarter 1 or is it Quarter 2?

So, what do I write? Am I writing about what has occurred in Quarter 1 or was it Quarter 4?

Many people when writing always seem to relate to time in relation to the year, seasons and what is happening but sometimes may drop in the odd comment about quarters – yet what are quarters?

Well for me, I think quarters are driven by work however, they not only relate to work but our life yet these are not really discussed by many – why not? In every day of our life, everything we do is determined not only by the money we have but those around us and our country.

So, if things around us are driven by money, why don’t we pay more attention to the whole picture and not us being selfish towards thinking of just ourselves? Hence, we need to think of quarters in relation to work as this does really have a great impact on our everyday lives.

So in essence, why sit back and think in quarters? Is it because, yes we could think of months but what happens if a small thing can make a big change to what we are doing that month? Thus we end up behind schedule and then fighting to play catch up?

So by thinking months, we aren’t creating a leap into a quarter and once you have landed in that a quarter – you have created thirteen weeks of business scheduling and planning – confusing? Now you have taken your thirteen weeks, you work out where you want to be in week fourteen – have you done that? Still confused?

By thinking in quarters, you can plan more effectively and break things down from there and work backwards. Now you know where you need to be, do you know what you need to do? Write everything day from what you need to earn, to what needs doing, what sales must be made (especially if these sales are restricted by sell by dates), etc, etc, as a list and start working you way through them. That is setting your goals simply for the quarter and if something happens, the list is still there to work on the next day.

One important thing though, make sure you have put an item in week six for setting next quarters goals. Always do this around week six as this is vital to the next stage of your business. Not only is this important because you can hit next quarter running without having to work out what you need to do for that quarter but what happens when a list is finished?

Set your goals to be realistic and achievable – you could put in one or two that you know will take two or three-quarters (maybe more) to achieve – as you need to get them done and completed successfully within the thirteen weeks. Now if you are lucky to have done that, next quarter’s list is done in week six and is sat ready for you to start……

So just remember those 5p’s as they will focus you from days to weeks to months to quarters to half years to years……….welcome to the world and life of business………
